Monday was an overwhelming day, after a slap up meal consisting of 20 popadoms, 3 onion bhajjees, a tikamasala curry, a lamb bhoona and a garlic nan courtesy of Nike (yep… more on that situation as it unfolds), followed by a ‘medium to aite’ Jumpoff (next months gona be big… trus) i saw our girl Simmy reading the latest issue of Hip Hop Connection that was given away in the goodie bags. So i stole it from her and flicked through…
Firstofall: Hip Hop Connection is the first and longest running Hip Hop publication in the world. It came out before Vibe, The Source and way before RWD. My personal design hustle, but more importantly The Ugly Kids Clubs current cultural infleunce is allover the issue… we interview Marc Ecko for RWD the month before (scroll down for that), and The Ugly Kids Club alongside the many business, organisations, companies and music artists that we currently or recently do work with are pretty much on every other page, front to back of this issue.
Its fitting that the title of this issue is called ‘UK StandTall’. Let me page by page break it down for you…
Our direct affiliates Mr. Bang On, SkinnyMan and Sway on the front cover alongside Roots Manuva, Million Dan and Jehst.
True Story: Skinnyman rolled up to the shoot on a BMX, throws it down and says something along the lines of ‘C’mon lets get this shoot over and done with i need to do some shots…. HIp Hop??? I dont even like Hip Hop i like Reggae’ (while Smoking a spliff and wearing the loudest and most in your face tye dye Bob Marley tee shirt)
Various snaps from Jumpoff and other events, most notably the lovely Sukey Sukey from our latest Lollipop Tee shoot.
There are 2 free Cds with the issue: One being The Cool Ninja Mixtape mixed by our very good friend DJ Shinobi. And there is an entire page of Shinobis classic qoutables and liverpudlian frafferies.
A Mr. Bang On interview with a full page shot of the exclusive gold foil on red Cool Ninja character tee designed by myself for Cool Ninja.
Qoute: ‘I’ve got a picture of Cilla Black next to my bed. I kiss it before i go to sleep every night…’
A Buggsy Interview with a full page pic of the young rasta with a little peek of The Smoking Ban Tee designed by myself in conjunction with The Smoking Ban Tour/Skinnyman/Ugly Kids Club last year.
Our first attempt into paid print advertising alongside Cool Ninja, The Grind and EasyLeaf: The current batch of companies that we are currently working alongside and have projects lined up with. I kept the design simple like the rest of the page, utilised all our current logos and threw in The Mariah Carey qoute (more on that later). Big ups to DJ Shinobi for the hookup.
Im still unsure on paid advertising, i have a lot of admiration for the business mentality of Nigo and A Bathing Ape and i am very impressed with the fact that they have never advertised as a brand. Not that i ever want the future of The Ugly Kids Club to ever be an imitation of Bape, but there are a number of business decisions to learn from, adopt and adapt.
Fact: Mariah Carey never leaves home without her black hoodie top done by Batlow…. can you imagine the day to day things that Mariah gets up to in her top that was made by me, in my house and by my hands….. the mind wanders.
Full page Cool Ninja ad alongside Hip Hop Honey No. 59: Vanessa Weasly (hell yeeeeeeeaah), featuring the upcoming collection of Cool Ninja tees that i was involved with.
Fact: The layout of the ad was also done by me in exchange for the best fish, chips and mushy pees that Farnham has to offer.
A four page Sway feature. We were involved with the making of his latest vid: F ur X featuring the handy graffiti skills of Ninja and Bomb ‘Vodka’ Foley and also the customs of Batlow and BV80.
Fact: Sway had 6 very large Louis Vuitton bags with him on set of his video filled with various awards including his BET award and numerous MOBOs.
An L Man feature. Although no longer with Cool Ninja, L.Man repped The Ugly Kids Club at the Cargo gig of The Smoking Ban Tour with exclusive Bomb ‘Vodka’ Foley customs. Pictures were lost due to ‘Vodka’ Foley and err….. Vodka.
An extensive Skinnyman feature. A new Skinnyman/Smoking ban tee is on its way. If you copped the first one…. you need to cop the next one. One of the best tees i have designed so far.
Qoute: ‘Lets just say im a good long distance runner. Im like a white Cambodian.’
Last but not least… the creme de la creme… on the back page in all its glossy glory: A Jumpoff ‘Hip Hop Connection 20th Anniversery’ full page ad for the next Jumpoff featuring L4L custom shutter shades from our friends at L4L but more importantly; a custom airbrushed tee for Rap 6: a Trims and Batlow collabo. Big ups to Rap 6. As an ad it also involves two of the biggest urban media companies out of The UK we are working with: The Jumpoff and Myspace The Hookup. Big ups to Ara and Andrew.
From front to back you can see the current relavnce of our brand directly and indirectly aswell as the extended network of friends and family of The Ugly Kids Club.
Make sure you cop it, if not to support the UK homegrown talent then to cop a free banging mix CD courtesy of the Mister DJ Shinobi.
We got a brand new toy to play with today so keep posted.
Get well Mr. Cee, we are rooting for you and a full recovery, and make sure you get down to The Grind in Brighton this thursday.
Batlow out.

Fact: Mariah Carey never leaves home without her black hoodie top done by Batlow…. can you imagine the day to day things that Mariah gets up to in her top that was made by me, in my house and by my hands… the mind wanders…
