AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMES: URBAN NERDS

June 19th, 2008

I threw some questions over to our good friend James at Urban Nerds to see whats crackin before the Urban Nerds night this saturday. They got Goldie. Read more for the interview…

BATLOW: Whats happenin’ Sir?

JAMES: Im good Mister Batlow. I love the fact that ugly kids looks so much prettier when the sun is shining. Role on Summer time.

B: Glad you pointed that out fam, that’s one of the ugly features of our website, it changes at different times of the day. So log on in the morning and you get yourself a beautiful sunrise etc. So what are we doing here?

JAMES: A lickle preview of me, myself and I.

B: Lets get it crackalackin… first and foremost introduce yourself to the Ugly audience and explain your relationship with The Ugly Kids Club.

JAMES: Friends and fam call me James, some call me Jiggy B, others call me Hooks and others such as yourself, Hooker. I’m one third of the trio that run East London club night and soon-to-be clothing label, Urban Nerds. We popped-up around the same time that the UKC came into existence and although we’re not quite identical twins, I guess there’s definitely a brotherly gene going on there! We utilised the services offered by yourselves and the Ugly Kids helped Urban Nerds take its first step into the clothing world with the launch of the first ‘Urban Nerd’ logo t. Since then the Club’s been a regular feature down at our nights at 93 Feet East, bringing with them a box of tricks that’s included live graff, body painting, t-shirts and even bails of hay! Watch out for our exclusive Urban Nerds x Ugly Kids Club t, designed by Cube and to be launched as part of Urban Nerds’ forthcoming and ultra limited, Face Range. Zoop.

B: Woah, Woah, Woah… slow your cowboy horses there James. Im new to this interview stuff so lets take it slow.

As you have said, we are not quite identical twins but we have been grinding side by side for the same amount of time now and it’s safe to say you knew us when we were just Kids. Whats your interpretation of The Ugly Kids Club and how would you sum us up?

J: Well Batlow, I think it’s fair to say there’s no question about it, you’re the Ugliest Kids around town. However, the Ugly Kids are also fantastic creative people with a real flare for art and design that’s reflected in an innovative range of street ware. I don’t think there’s a collective of heads out there who combine the same range of talent under one name.

B: There have been numerous nights where we have all been lick up and drunk off mojitos, chrome urinals are alot you know? We even took our drinking to exploits to Barcalona Bread and Butter this year and was where i first discovered the wodners of Yeigermeister. Whats been a classic Ugly moment that will forever stick in your head?

J: Chrome urinals sure are hard to top (shout outs to Sports Bar) and don’t forget those extra-strength Mai Tai nights at the ICA! If we’re talking Barcelona, Bomb’s attempt at pigeon Spanish in the taxi were nothing to write home about, but absolutely hilarious. Although, I think you said it all. Partying up in the hills of Barca was an ultimate, classic, Ugly moment and the only thing more boozy was the closing party no doubt. I will probably never forget it but if I do, I’m sure the sticker marks on my favorite jacket will remind me. Cheers guys.

B: Bombs Pigeon spanish! Ha. The ironic thing was that you were the one that inspired us to get the stickers in the first place. Buts its all love, you ceased wearing our customs since you switched up your stylo to Urban Nerd logo tees and JC/DC New Eras. We had to get you that exclusive mastercard all over print hooded jacket. 1 of 1. So we know you do regular sellout roadblock ramjam events at 93 Feet East. Urban Nerd has established itself as The Shoreditch Urban Event, a night with the right amount of Urban and the right amount of Shoreditch trend to make it the only place to be in shoreditch when you got your night going on. How did it start and whats the concept behind the nights?

J: One my good mates used to call me an urban nerd so when I decided to start-up a club night in March 07, it seemed like the obvious choice of name! Over a year down the line, urban nerd has become Urban Nerds, with three of us on board pushing different aspects of our personalities into the brand. The first night set out to give people ‘urban’ music without all the cheese of West End venues and ditching the smart and sexy requirements and corny flyers. At the same time I wanted to avoid getting caught-up entirely in Shoreditch trend. A year on I think this philosophy still stands. Music still matters more than ever, with great line-ups and a quality of sound that I don’t think any other East London night delivers. Most of all, we pride ourselves on the great party atmosphere people experience down at Urban Nerds. Check it out for yourself at our next night: The Urban Nerds save the vinyl special & DMC World Championship London Heats featuring GOLDIE! Saturday 21st June @ 93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London

B: Im still in awe that you managed to get Goldie down for a set. Firstly its a DMC heat night AND you got Goldie!! Ima make sure i catch that mans set. Get him to sign my SprayCan Art. I dunn know that you got more to plug…. what else is on the Urban Nerd horizon?

J: Don’t watch the Urban Nerds Do The Dam trip. That’s right, we’re moving the party to Amsterdam, yes AMSTERDAM, over the last weekend of July. From July 24th – 27th and for only £129.99 we’re giving all you Urban Nerds out there the chance to visit Europe’s smoking capital! For that price not only do you get travel and accommodation BUT your Urban Nerds wristband will also entitle you to TWO nights raving. If that just aint’ enough, check-out the list of artists we’re bringing over, just for you…Plastician, Logan Sama, Tes La Rok, Little Dee, P Money, Heny G, Hijack and our Urban Nerds residents of course + many more! Tickets are selling super-fast but pick up your from www.urban-nerds.com/dam.html

B: I reckon thats about it. Thankyou very much for participating in our game.
Pay your bills, propose to your girlfriend and do any other general shout outs and plugs:

J: Seen. Erm, yeah LCC if you’re reading, don’t send the bailiffs, I’m gonna’ pay that Library fine this week, I swear (no joke).
